Last night’s Gossip Girl debuted the new spin-off series staring Brittany Snow, aka Lily Rhodes, aka Lily Van Der Woodsen, circa 1983. We are introduced to the blue eyed preppy blonde in Malibu freshly kicked out of boarding school. She’s trying to escape the controlling reach of her mother and comes to L.A. from Santa Barbara in search of her dad’s support. When he bails and heads to London, dismissing her distress, she sets off to look for her long lost sister, Carol, who lives in L.A. and is trying to “make it” as an actress.
Throughout the coarse of the episode, Lily’s sheltered, goody-two-shoes persona is slowly stripped away, thanks to some glorious 80’s threads (think Madonna in the early years with more color), a waiter named Owen Campos from the Valley who she’s slowly but surely falling for and an eye-opening night in jail. No Doubt made an appearance in the episode covering “Stand and Deliver,” and we also met a curious character who we simply know as Van Der Woodsen – the blonde rich kid who has Lily arrested. That last name can’t be a coincidence.
I actually really liked the episode – it was a nice break from the over-dramatic, predictable normal Gossip Girl episodes we’ve become used to lately. The whole episode wasn’t all of young Lily though – it flashed back and forth between now and then. So what happened with Serena, Blair and the rest of them you ask? Well, after Blair gets her perfect prom night, Blair and Nate are named prom king and queen and then break up again, but this time for good (yea, right). Both Serena and Lily learn to love their moms for who they are, though Lily and Rufus are now on hold.
BIG teaser for next week: will Chuck finally tell Blair he loves her and end these childish games? Only time will tell. Tune in next week to get the scoop on everyone’s favorite upper east side.
Until Then- xoxo,
