NAS & Nick Cannon have a lot to say about the state of rap, claiming that what was once a form of empowerment is now a disenfranchised form of entertainment controlled by the corporate world. They did this by creating a rap called “Eat Dat Watermelon,” which is supposed to be the future manifestation of rap and hip-hop if it continues to be something that caters to the desires of corporations and mainstream media.
The beat is off the hook, and I could listen to it for hours, but I don’t feel right doing it. It really hits home at the fact that most artists are just puppets, and slaves to the demands of their audience, and moreover the corporations that pay them. This video is also in alignment with Lil’ Wayne’s new song, “Whip It Like A Slave,” which I talked about earlier this week. Is this a new trent in rap?
Check out the video and let us know what you think. Is their point valid or have they crossed the line? Do you think NAS & Nick are right or do you feel they’ve gone too far even though their initial intention was probably pretty poignant?
