Victoria Hesketh left her previous band [lastfm]Dead Disco [/lastfm]in late 2008. Quite simply, she wasn’t having fun anymore. She kept writing, with no real set plans on her next move. Following her posting of cover songs on YouTube and MySpace, her next steps were planted and [lastfm]Little Boots [/lastfm]was born. We welcomed her to our studio when her album Hands was released here in the U.S.
She was the 40th most scrobbled artist for Last.fm in 2009. Following her time spent in [lastfm]Dead Disco[/lastfm], Victoria Hesketh, (later nicknamed [lastfm]Little Boots [/lastfm]by her friend, making reference to her small shoe size), one night began messing about on YouTube doing cover songs. Good feedback started, which led to the obvious…make more! Soon after, she assembled orginal material, re-hooked up with Greg Kurstin from [lastfm]The Bird And The Bee[/lastfm], and began work on her debut album. Joe Goddard from [lastfm]Hot Chip [/lastfm]also plays a major role in this album.
According to [lastfm]Little Boots[/lastfm], from our sitdown interview, working with Greg, whom she first met while in [lastfm]Dead Disco[/lastfm], “gave her confidence in songwriting and encouraged her. He was the first one she turned to when she went out on her own.” They have similar ideas about pop music, and both love the challenge of making a perfect pop song.[pullquote quote="I don't know if I'd be doing this if it weren't for Greg (Kurstin)." credit="Little Boots"]
Her love of late ’70′s and early ’80′s synth pop is worn on her sleeves. [lastfm]The Human League[/lastfm], [lastfm]Kate Bush[/lastfm], [lastfm]Madonna[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Gary Numan [/lastfm]are the first artists she mentions. She also has a fondness for Italian disco linked to producer [lastfm]Giorgio Moroder[/lastfm]. Her current faves include U.S. label mate [lastfm]Marina & The Diamonds[/lastfm], [lastfm]Ellie Goulding[/lastfm], [lastfm]Hurts[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Fever Ray[/lastfm].
Her debut album, Hands, was released in the U.K. im June of ’09. It saw it’s U.S. release in early March of this year. When she arrives at our studio and sets up, it’s obvious that she’s at ease. Having promoted this album for nearly a year at that point, radio visits and interviews are nothing new to her. See her performances below of “Remedy,” “New In Town” and “Meddle” all from the debut disc. For a bonus, listen to Last.fm Discover all week to hear her stunning version of “Running Up That Hill (Make A Deal With God)” by her favorite artist of all-time, [lastfm]Kate Bush[/lastfm]. Also, check out her duet with Human League’s [lastfm]Philip Oakey[/lastfm], “Symmetry” from the Hands album which you MUST hear!
