Nicki Minaj: Her Past, Present & Future
[lastfm]Nicki Minaj[/lastfm] is currently the hottest name in hip-hop, but life wasn’t always so glamorous for the Harajuku Barbie.
Nicki tells all in her interview with CNN.
With heavy lyrics about having an alcoholic father who once tried to burn down their home with her mother inside, it’s no surprise that the New York rapper didn’t have it easy growing up.
Though, despite her many obstacles, Onika “Nicki Minaj” Maraj is without a doubt one of today’s best hip-hop artists.
Nicki attended the the famed LaGuardia Arts High School with hopes of becoming an actress saying:
When I got out of high school, I didn’t really want to take time and go and audition, I just wanted to get a job and work and get my own place.
Ordinary nine to five jobs quickly bored Nicki, so she decided to work her way into the music industry.
She started off writing and singing hooks for local rappers, which brought Nicki to realize her true potential as an artist.
Nicki’s moved along way since then. Now, she is signed to Young Money label (founded by [lastfm]Lil’ Wayne[/lastfm]), has won two BET Awards and is up for best new artist at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
Nicki has also had eight Billboard’s Hot 100 singles, three of which made the Top 10, and her newest single, “Your Love,” is still dominating the rap charts.
Fans anxiously await Nicki’s debut album, “Pink Friday,” which is to release November 23.
Though the rapper has already accomplished so much, she isn’t planning to slow down anytime soon:
The people who still feel Nicki needs to prove herself — I agree with them. I love the fact that people still feel like, ‘Show me more, give me more,’ because that’s what I was born to do.
