When we got to interview Robyn about what are arguably the best three albums of the year (her Body Talk series), one of the questions we asked was what her next video was going to be. Ever elusive, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Robyn[/lastfm] basically answered, “whatever single is popular in the US.”
The people have spoken and what they’ve received in return is a very low-budget, but fun video for “Dancehall Queen” that emulates an experience at the infamous karaoke bars of Japan. The only thing missing from the video? Robyn, the queen of 2010 dancehall queens.
Co-directed by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Diplo[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Red Foxx [/lastfm]and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Pomp&Clout[/lastfm], the video for “Dancehall Queen” has all the street cred, with none of the star factor. Robyn is always quirky and charismatic in her videos; this is just a low-fi version of a uniquely cliché idea.
The thing this video has going for it? Robyn’s amazing song. Doesn’t it make you want to go down low like “SHIWOUW-SHIWOUW-OW-OW?”
