Last.fm Trends: Willow Smith Gears Up For 2011
MTV’s Brand New: For 2011 shortlist is a definitive list of who’ll be shaking up the music industry come the new year. Taking in ten artists from across genres, it predicts the likely chart-toppers of tomorrow.
Last.fm Trends is looking at the nominees over the next few weeks, and today it’s the turn of the newest kid on the block, ten-year-old Willow Smith. Having already topped Last.fm’s Hype Chart, she’s got a world of expectation on her shoulders.
Stamped with Jay-Z‘s seal of approval and signed to his Roc Nation label, Willow has had quite a boost to her fledgling musical career already. With her debut album scheduled for 2011, no doubt we’ll be seeing a lot more of her.
“Whip My Hair” is the itchily infectious track that’s propelled her into the limelight: her charts are full of its remixes featuring urban queen Nicki Minaj and newcomer Lore’l, plus of course the all-powerful original. Its broad appeal, from clubs to the Billboard Hot 100, is proved by its scrobble count.
To date, the track has gained 374,758 scrobbles from 62,169 listeners, leaping since September to a peak of over 16,000 weekly listeners. Smith stands out as the most commercially successful nominee in the shortlist to date – but time will tell how they all fare.
