We love our CDs and iTunes downloads as much as the next person, but you don’t know if an artist truly rocks until you’ve seem him/her/them perform live. Here are five of our favorite performances in Los Angeles in 2010 … and here’s looking to a full concert calendar in 2011!
- Jay-Z, Staples Center, March 26th
Not only did Hova bring down the house, but he also gave love to Los Angeles king [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ice Cube[/lastfm], who jumped onstage to do “Check Yo Self.” Ice Cube, rocking the Lakers’ home court again? Today and back in the day.
- Rihanna, Staples Center, July 21st
Ri-Ri brought her best to downtown Los Angeles, but what put the show over the top was a special guest appearance by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Eminem[/lastfm] to help perform “Love The Way You Lie.”
- Lady Gaga, Staples Center, August 11
The music was solid, if unspectacular, and one could say the same about the content of the dancing and the flimsy “story,” but [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm] does spectacle like no one in pop music today. Monster Ball was worth seeing if for no other reason than that, to see music blown up as big as possible.
- Bruno Mars, The Grove, September 17
Before Doo-Wops and Hooligans came out, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bruno Mars[/lastfm] took the stage at the Grove in Hollywood for a free show, and performed several album cuts, along with this fantastic mashup of “Billie Jean” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit:”
- Katy Perry, The Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater , October 10
If you were there, you know what was up. Not only was Mrs. Brand in fine form, but it all went down at the Music Box, which is the smallest space you’ll be able to see Perry for a very, very long time.
