The venerable [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Dr. Dre[/lastfm] hasn’t lost any of his street cred even though the upcoming Training Day is his first new album since 2001.
His new video with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eminem[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Skylar Grey[/lastfm] shows dramatic montages of him dying and resurrecting himself–apparently a very expensive metaphor for what Dre anticipates he is doing with his hip-hop career.
They set the scene. It’s February 18th, 2001. Present Dr. Dre is looking at the ocean, obviously under severe anxiety, while they show clips of him spliced with Past Dr. Dre in a dramatic montage.
After all that pathos, he gets into a black Ferrari and drives a winding seaside road at illegal speeds.
It starts to get darker. Dr. Dre starts remembering more scenes from his past while gunning on the gas.
He becomes so distracted, his car crashes and he flips. Apparently, Dr. Dre now needs a doctor.
Now we are in a weird futuristic lab. We see what looks like the ghost of Skylar Grey floating above a badly injured Dr. Dre on life support while a very worried Eminem walks up to his body. Holographic Grey starts to float around singing the refrain:
I need a doctor/call me a doctor/I need a doctor to bring me back to life.
On a large screen, we see Dr. Dre’s memories while Eminem raps. Then we see Dr. Dre in some sort of water tank that seems sort of pointless.
Next, Dr. Dre comes back to life and is doing physical therapy and talking about how much he Eminem means to him with lyrics like:
all I see is Slim/f**k all you fairweather friends/all I need is him.
