Full confession time: Even though I pretty much grew up in Los Angeles, these gorgeous, sunshine-filled days like today aren’t my idea of perfect weather. Give me a rain puddle, a bitter wind, and some hot caffeinated beverage and I am livin’ the dream.
There is only one circumstance when I actually enjoy the warm Southern California breeze–cruising with my windows down on palm tree lined streets and listening to “old-school” hip-hop. As a music writer for AMP Radio, I’m in my late 20s and what other people consider old-school is “high school” for me. One such example is probably my favorite California anthem of all time–[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]2pac[/lastfm]’s “California Love” featuring [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Dr. Dre[/lastfm].
Listening to “California Love,” is the nostalgic equivalent of throwing on a sundress, grabbing my craziest friends, hopping on the bus that goes down Wilshire (from Koreatown) to the beach, and walking from the Santa Monica Pier to check out hot urban skater dudes at Venice Beach.
At sixteen, it would always end in heartbreak, as we’d listen to 2pac on a boombox on the beach and when I would go in for the first kiss, something would always happen. A fight; a girlfriend; my friend warning me to back off like a friend should.
But “California Love’ always reminds me of those days when I had no responsibility, a beautiful day, and infinite amounts of potential. No doubt there is a reason why all the kids from the opposite coast head to California with stars in their eyes and no money in their pockets. As 2pac and Dr. Dre say it best in “California Love,”
Throw it up y’all, throw it up, Throw it up
Let’s show these fools how we do this on that west side
Cause you and I know it’s tha best side.
No matter how old we get, what weather we prefer, or what life throws at us, you and I “know it’s tha best side.”
California for life!
