Here at AMP Radio, we’re gearing up for Switch Party #14 with Jeremih.

It’s all going down tomorrow night, can you believe it?

So what better way to kick things off than having the “Down On Me” singer come into the morning show to chat with Carson Daly?

Jeremih swung by the studio today to give us the scoop on his surging career and talk smack about the NBA playoffs!

In Hollywood, we’re so used to hearing the same kinds of stories about how an artist got their big break, so we were thrown for a loop when Jeremih shared his impressive background.

He began playing instruments at the age of 3, teaching himself how to play the piano, drums and saxophone.

Jeremih graduated high school at the age of 16 and headed off to college to study engineering.  Amazing, right?

He credits his family for getting him on the right track:

I represent the South Side of Chicago…I grew up in a household very family-oriented, a household full of women.  And sure enough, I was able to graduate at the age of 16. I went to U of I [University of Illinois]. That’s when I started to really notice how music was beginning to take over my life.

Even more shocking, the 23-year-old never predicted that he would be the one singing smash records like his breakout hit, “Birthday Sex!”

I never thought I’d actually be the world-renowned known singer. I thought I was going to be getting on, as far as in this industry, production-wise or creating new talent. It’s amazing how things work out.

Jeremih’s career really took off once he met L.A. Reid in 2009.  The acclaimed producer signed him to Def Jam Recordings on the spot.

I’m glad Def Jam took me in and now I feel at home at that spot. Just to be on a record label with a lot of dope other artists…you just played like Rihanna and Kanye, you think of your favorite artists, they’re pretty much on Def Jam. You know what I’m saying? So I’m glad to be a part of the crew.

Now he’s enjoying massive success with one of his latest singles, “Down On Me.” Jeremih explained to Carson that even he was surprised when he found out [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]50 Cent[/lastfm] would be featured on the track.

It was incredible even creating it with 50 Cent. I wasn’t going say I ever counted him out as being a featured artist on it, but nevertheless I had no clue he was going to be on it. I wrote the first verse and the last verse without knowing he would be on the second verse.

So what’s next for Jeremih?

Well, besides rocking out at our Switch Party tomorrow night!

Expect a lot of music from this rising star.  He’s been working late nights in the studio, so his voice was noticeably raspy this morning.

Right now, yeah, I’m just working on some projects myself.  I’ve been doing a little bit of everything, whether it’s been for myself or just trying to get placements for other artists. That was really my goal at the beginning…to find new talent.  Hopefully get a lot more credibility as a writer.
