One of the best perks about working at AMP Radio is that we get the opportunity to go to special events and movies so we can tell you all about it here on our blog!
Last night, I schlepped my way over to Universal CityWalk to check out a preview screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Will it be one of summer’s biggest blockbusters? I’ll tell you what I think!
To be honest, I found the latest Pirates film to be a step below the rest in the franchise and I’m a big fan of the previous three action flicks.
The ability to combine jaw-dropping sword fights with a witty script is harder than you think it would be, but with star Johnny Depp, how could you go wrong?
The main difference between On Stranger Tides and the other Pirates movies is the lack of a solid script. The plot seems to drag on. The dialogue is pretty minimal and only used as a vehicle to move from one action scene to another.
That being said, the action scenes were pretty awesome. If you’re into explosions and sword fights, then this movie delivers.
Last night’s screening was presented in IMAX 3D. Most of the time I feel like that’s a little gimmicky, but Pirates was done tastefully.
Just make sure to grab a seat further back so you can take in all the fight sequences.
You may already know that Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley opted out of appearing in On Stranger Tides and their presence is definitely missed.
The movie tries to fill that void with a new storyline between a mermaid and devout Christian, but it just doesn’t live up to great cast of the first 3 films.
I was really excited to see what actress Penelope Cruz would bring to the table. She was fairly respectable, considering she was a few months preggers during filming, but I expected a more electric chemistry between her and Johnny Depp.
And sadly, even Captain Jack Sparrow didn’t seem like his usual feisty self. With a confusing love story and not a lot of dialogue, Depp couldn’t shine like he normally does.
All in all, it’s not a train wreck, but it’s disappointing based on how awesome the earlier movies in the series were.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens in theaters tomorrow.
