The last weekend in May, Memorial Day, is not just a day to celebrate the unofficial beginning of summer barbecues and pool parties, but it’s a special day to commemorate the heroic deeds of all our U.S. Military soldiers who died in service.
To help us remember all of those who have given their lives to keep America the land of the free and the home of the brave, we’ve made a list of our Top 10 Pop & Hip-Hop Ballads That Honor Our War Heroes And Fallen Soldiers for this Memorial Day.
The list includes artists like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mariah Carey[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jay-Z[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eminem[/lastfm], and[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Beyonce[/lastfm].
10. “Hero”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mariah Carey[/lastfm]
Without the heroic actions of our service men and women who have cast their fears aside–including the possible fear of death–we might not have the strength to carry on as a country:
And then a hero comes along/With the strength to carry on/And you cast your fears aside/And you know you can survive/So when you feel like hope is gone/Look inside you and be strong/And you’ll finally see the truth/That a hero lies in you
9. “War”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jay Sean[/lastfm]
This song isn’t exactly about a physical war, more like a war of love, but Jay Sean’s metaphorical allusions to being a soldier in the war of love could easily be transferred to represent sentiments about our country:
Now it feels like soldiers in a war and none of us are backing down/And I will show you victory is mine before we leave this battleground/Cause he don’t wanna leave, and I don’t wanna go/And I know just how this battle goes/He don’t wanna leave and I don’t wanna fight this kind of war
8. “Save The Hero”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Beyoncé[/lastfm]
We aren’t as brave or strong as our heroes, so while we can’t necessarily save them, we can certainly use our all our passion and energy to remember them as best as possible:
I guess I’m their soldier/Well, who’s gonna be mine/Who’s there to save the hero/When she’s left all alone/And she’s crying out for help/Who’s there to save the hero/Who’s there to save the girl/After she saves the world
7. “I Miss You”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Miley Cyrus[/lastfm]
One might not expect such a deep memorial song from a Disney pop artist like Miley Cyrus, but the teenage superstar penned quite a poignant song about missing a loved one:
I miss you/I miss your smile/And I still shed a tear every once in any while/And even though it’s different now/You’re still here somehow/My heart won’t let you go/And I need you to know/I miss you
6. “I’ll Be Missing You”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Puff Daddy[/lastfm] & [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Faith Evans[/lastfm]
Puff Daddy and Faith Evans wrote this song about[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Notorious BIG[/lastfm]’s tragic death, but the lyrics of the tune can be applied to anyone whom we have loved and lost:
It’s kinda hard with you not around/Know you in heaven smilin down/Watchin us while we pray for you/Every day we pray for you/Til the day we meet again/In my heart is where I’ll keep you friend/Memories give me the strength I need to proceed/Strength I need to believe
5. “Hero”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Miguel[/lastfm]
Up-and-coming R&B star, Miguel, wrote a[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Prince[/lastfm]-esque song with an emotional chorus where he talks about being our defender and protector:
I’m your hero, hero/defender, protector/For you, for you!/I’m your hero, hero/defender, protector/For you, for you!
Avril Lavigne wrote this gorgeous song for her grandfather who had passed away, but the lyrics can be easily applied to anyone whom we has courageously served our country and sacrificed their lives for ours:
I didn’t get around to kiss you/Goodbye on the hand/I wish that I could see you again/I know that I can’t
3. “Hero”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Enrique Iglesias[/lastfm]
Even though some of our heroes are no longer with us, we can still remember how they kissed away our pain:
I can be your hero, baby/I can kiss away the pain/I will stand by you forever/You can take my breath away
2. “Soldier”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eminem[/lastfm]
A soldier is not an average man or woman; a soldier has special qualities that regular person doesn’t posses. Eminem sings about all these attributes:
I’m a soldier/These shoulders hold up so much/They wont budge, I’ll never fall or fold up/I’m a soldier/Even if my collar bones crush or crumble/I will never slip or stumble/I’m a soldier
1. “A Ballad For The Fallen Soldier”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Jay-Z[/lastfm]
Whether you are a soldier in the war, or a street soldier, Jay-Z says we should mourn those who were brave enough to risk their lives for their families:
You lost him mama, the wars calling him/Feel its his duty to fall in line with all of them/He’s a soldier/Rose through the ranks as the head of your house hold/Now it’s time to provide bank/Like he’s supposed to/Now just remember while he’s gone til November/There’s part of him growing up/His shirt’s soaks up your tears as he holds ya
