Carson Daly: Skylar Grey Returns To AMP Radio To Shed Some Light On Her Mysterious Debut Album, “Invinsible”
Skylar Grey has to be one of the most mysterious artists in music biz right now.
She sings the hooks of both Dr. Dre’s “I Need A Doctor” and Diddy’s “Coming Home,” but up until a few months ago, we couldn’t pick her face out of a crowd.
Turns out, that’s the way Skylar likes it. But now she’s giving us a glimpse into her soul before the release of her latest solo album, Invinsible.
She stopped by AMP Radio this morning to perform a medley of her biggest hits and give us the inside scoop about what we can expect from her in the future!
She was shrouded in darkness, which we all thought was due to bad lighting, but Skylar explains it was part of the plan all along:
I am the angel of darkness. The shadows worked for me.
It’s been full speed ahead ever since for the prolific singer/songwriter.
She just released a teaser track, “Dance Without Me,” which you can download for free below!
She’s signed to Alex Da Kid’s record label. He’s known for producing major alternative and hip hop records and Skylar was stoked to see how their collaboration would pan out:
I’m so excited about the record. It sounds so good. It’s kind of like what you’ve heard from me, but it goes a lot further than that. It’s like full-length songs instead of just hooks and the production, it kind of ranges. It’s really diverse. Every song sounds different.
The album Invinsible, which comes out this fall, is all about her journey as an artist, which hasn’t always been easy:
The first official single is called “Invisible” and the album is called Invinsible and it’s kind of the story of how I went from feeling invisible to becoming invincible. It’s this transition that I tell a story about…”Invisible” is actually how I felt about myself. I felt like I didn’t know who I was.
And in true, mysterious Skylar fashion, she hid herself away from the world to write the album!
I actually retreated into the woods to be alone and get away from everyone and live in a cabin. Yeah, I chopped wood and went to the bathroom outside. Like, the whole deal. It’s not safe! And that’s the whole point because I wanted to prove to myself that I could totally handle my own existence by myself.
During this soul searching retreat, Skylar brought a recording studio with her and co-wrote the Grammy-nominated Eminem, Rihanna duet, “Love the Way You Lie.”
Now that she’s back in the land of the living, the 25-year-old is gearing up for the release of Invinsible.
