It’s no surprise that he has become a household name. And this year, BMI is taking time to recognize that.

Snoop Dogg will receive the BMI Icon Award from the music publishing organization at the 11^th Annual BMI Urban Awards slated to take place at the end of August.

Broadcast Media, Inc. (BMI) represents more than 475,000 songwriters, singers, and composers in every genre of music, so the honor is even more remarkable because of the fact that it’s not like they are picking from a short list.

If that doesn’t seem like a big enough credit for the king of the Dogg Pound, think about the people who have won the award before him:[lastfm link_type="artist_info"] The Jacksons[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]George Clinton[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Bee Gees[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Little Richard[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Chuck Berry[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Issac Hayes[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Willie Nelson[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Carlos Santana,[/lastfm] to name a few.

This is a list of legends, people! Not pop stars or really hot personalities, but music legends.

They shaped the tunes our ears heard for decades after their reign at the top. Snoop is clearly in great company these days. So, where does he go from here?

Well, he is going on tour with the New Boyz and he is making a buddy stoner comedy with Wiz Khalifa. Is that a step up or step down?

I don’t know, but I can’t wait for it!

The awards honor the most performed songs on radio and TV over the last 12 month period.
