As far as music career retrospectives go, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Skylar Grey[/lastfm]’s is rife with subtle mythology. We’ve heard the story of how [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eminem[/lastfm] stood up for her to be “the voice” (instead of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]) on Dr. Dre’s “I Need A Doctor.”

We’ve seen her come out of smoke and shadows at awards shows. For all intents and purposes, Miss Grey has seemingly had a very mysterious career so far.

But no longer. With Grey’s new song and video “Invisible,” the shy, slightly goth songbird is ready to go to grand lengths to get noticed. Even if that means “lighting herself on fire.”

In what is soon to become her iconic combo of hoodie and dramatic cat-eye black eyeliner, Skylar Grey walks around a city doing extraordinary things: perching atop buildings, lighting herself on fire in a subway, and playing frogger with cars.

Grey also sings about less fantastical (and shockingly angst-y) things like…cutting her skin. Despite her dark lyrical suggestions, in a way, Grey’s song “Invisible” is a hopeful pop ballad for the depressive teenage misanthrope.

It’s really for this reason that we like the song. Not everything poppy has to be pretty. Sometimes days can be grey and, just like Skylar Grey, one day you can stop feeling invisible.

Even if that means sitting behind [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Big Sean[/lastfm] on an airplane.
