October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and AMP Radio is working in association with Stand Up 2 Cancer and Breakaway From Cancer to help raise funds in order to find a cure.

What many women don’t realize that one of the best ways to “cure” breast cancer is to actively work to prevent it. Help yourself (or the women around you) by getting the facts about breast cancer, getting informed, and getting involved.

Here are some facts about breast cancer that you might not know:

An estimated 39,840 women will die from Breast Cancer in 2011.

♥ Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women after lung cancer.

Breast Cancer effects 1 in 8 women in the United States.

♥ There are a number of misconceptions about what can cause breast cancer. These include, but are not limited to, using deodorants or antiperspirants, wearing under-wire bras, having a miscarriage or induced abortion, or bumping/bruising the breast tissue.

2.4 million women living in the United States have been diagnosed with and treated for Breast Cancer.

♥ One myth about breast cancer is that a person’s risk is increased only when there are affected relatives on the mother’s side of the family. However, the father’s side of the family is equally important in assessing breast cancer risk.

Breast Cancer is the most common form of cancer among women.

♥ It has been estimated that if every woman over the age of 50 had her yearly mammogram, breast cancer deaths in this age group would drop by 25% or more.

If you’re female and in your 20s, get a clinical breast exam every three years.

♥ Breast cancer in men is rare, accounting for approximately 1% of breast cancer rates in the U.S. Nearly 400 men die of breast cancer each year. African American men are more likely to die from breast cancer than white men.

In the United States, there are more than 2.5 million Breast Cancer survivors.

♥ Besides skin cancer, Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in America.

More than 1 in 4 cancers are Breast Cancer

♥ Mammograms should be part of every woman’s preventative health care. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

There are currently 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States
