It’s t-minus 1 day until Thanksgiving…are you slaving away in the kitchen yet?

Many of us here at AMP Radio are making Thanksgiving dinner on our own for the very first time and honestly, it’s a little intimidating!

With that in mind, Carson called up the famous Butterball Turkey Talk-Line to get the basics on cooking for the big day.

The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line has been up and running for 29 years. Basically, it’s a hotline you can call to get answers for all your crazy Thanksgiving Day cooking questions.

They are only open during the months of November and December, but during those two months, they respond to more than 100,000 calls every year. On Thanksgiving Day alone, they field over 12,000 calls!

Today, Carson spoke to turkey expert Marge, who gave us the full lowdown.

The most common question she gets is how long it takes to thaw a turkey. Here’s the bottom line:

  • If you’re going to let it sit in the refrigerator, allow 1 day for every 4 pounds.
  • If you don’t have that kind of time, you can let it thaw in cold water and that takes 30 minutes per pound.

After more than 25 years in the turkey biz, Marge has had her fair share of interesting callers, but the weirdest one came from a man who called in telling her that his turkey was too big for his roasting pan.

How did he go about fixing the problem? He wrapped the turkey in a towel, stomped on it, broke off a few bones and then he was finally able to fit it in the pan! Well, at least he was creative about it!

Take a listen to the rest of Marge’s advice, including the age old debate, can you put the stuffing inside the turkey or is it better to cook it outside of the bird? Her answer might surprise you!
