Being a vegetarian at Thanksgiving dinner can be hard for a plethora of reasons, especially when presented when few options at the table to eat. Luckily, most Thanksgiving dishes aren’t meat-centric and anyone with creativity (or the foresight to bring their own dish) can eat heartily–and without the turkey coma afterward!
Check out some of our ways to get through the holiday meat-free!
Mmm. Mashed Potatoes. Carrots. Brussels Sprouts. Sweet Potatoes. Cranberry sauce. There are so many options of other things to eat the table, sometimes meat is not missed. Make sure meat is not used in the dishes (like bacon on Brussels Sprouts) and if you are vegan, set aside carrots and other buttered vegetables before they get doused. Instead, slather on some omega rich margarine and nutritional yeast.
The same goes for buttery mashed potatoes. Switch out the butter for vegan margarine and some soy milk. Make a delicious gravy from tomatoes–sort of like a marinara sauce.
If you are going somewhere where you can’t help cook, prepare a few vegetarian or vegan dishes at home to bring. Some of our favorites: Kale with Cranberries & Walnuts, Quinoa and Pomegranate Salad With Toasted Walnuts, Zucchini Cakes.
Tempeh, Seitan, & Tofurkey
Fake meat can be delicious if you prepare it the right way. Many fake meat items like seitan, tempeh, and Tofurky are made with wheat gluten and soy so make sure If you can tolerate wheat gluten and soy, check out stuff like Tofurky’s Vegetarian Feast which comes with other goodies like stuffing and dumplings!
A trick that we’ve discovered to keep the fake meat from getting dry is it in a delicious mixture of ginger, lemon juice, orange juice, cranberry sauce, and soy sauce. Slather it on while the fake meat is cooking and it becomes infused with citrus-y flavor. Here are some other great recipes we love: Roast Tofurky with carmelized onions and cherry relish, Grape-Apple Tofurky Salad, Maple Pecan Tofurky Roast.
