Yep, you read that right. I’ve been hearing about [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Childish Gambino[/lastfm] for the last few months and kept thinking that he looked familiar. Well, that was because I watch the show Community and actor Donald Glover is behind the unique moniker. He’s hilarious but who knew the kid could rap! If I had to compare it, his stuff is somewhere between [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Drake[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kanye[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kid Cudi[/lastfm] which is why he’s featured this week on my AMP Playlist.
Rap music is definitely alive and well. Camp, the new and first album by Childish Gambino is out now and it’s good. If you know anything about Donald Glover, you’d know he’s insanely funny and his sense of humor definitely comes through in his lyrics. He just played a show at Club Nokia DTLA.
The song I’m using to introduce you to him is really dancy (taking influence from someone like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Deadmau5[/lastfm]) and the topic? Well… the song is called “Heartbeat” so you take a guess. If you like it, YouTube some of his amazing videos he’s created for his other songs. Very similar to what Kanye did when he released that 30 minute movie for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. And of course, get Gambino’s album. It’s versatile but full of the same good stuff.
*NOTE: It’s not insanely laced with profanities, but this is the uncensored song. It’s heaviest after the 3:00 mark.
