Booker’s Sample This – Week One With J.Cole “Work Out”

The holidays are over and school is back in session,  and we’ve got a new school to introduce you to: Booker’s “Sample This”. Every week your favorite afternoon DJ will school you on songs that have been sampled from another tune.

Have you ever heard one of your favorite songs played here on AMP and it sounds similar to another song you have heard in the past? Of course you have! We are here to give you a little lesson on the original song that inspired some of your new favorite hits!

Our very first lesson  comes from[lastfm link_type=””] J Cole’s [/lastfm]single “Workout” which is a sample of [lastfm link_type=””]Paula Abdul[/lastfm]’s 1988 hit “Straight Up”.

Straight  up was her third single released from her debut album “Forever Your Girl” and reached  number one on the Billboard Hot 100. This single is responsible for bringing her widespread  public attention and Ms.Abdul currently appears on the hit show “X Factor” as a judge.

[lastfm link_type=””]J Cole [/lastfm]’s single “Workout”  sits at #16 on R&B & Hip Hop and is also nominated for Best New Artist at this years 54th Grammy Awards.

So first, take a listen to Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.”

Now check out, J Cole “Workout” which is certified Gold by RIAA

  • There you have it folks, your first lesson! Check back next week for your second lesson. Any guesses who it might be?
  • A.M.

Don’t forget to include Kanye West’s “Workout Plan” too, which comprises the majority of the hook. :-)

Cool feature! As we like to say in the Midwest, “Learn these youngin’s something!” Lol. Keep it up!
