Booker’s “Sample This” Week Two With Drake “Take Care”

View Comments

I’m back with Week 2 of Booker’s “Sample This”. To give you a recap, this is a place where I will give you lessons every week on songs that have been sampled. For instance, last week, I broke down the song [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]J Cole[/lastfm] “Workout.” Go back to week one to see what X factor Judge is responsible for that sample.

This week, I take on Drake’s “Take Care.” I am sure you remember the first time that you heard Drake’s track with Ri and you were blown away by how hauting the song sounds.  It’s dark and edgy and so powerful.  I am sure you also thought that with it sounding so simple that it must be all “original” but guess again.  It’s sampled, over, and over, literally.  Here is the scoop!

Ok so week one’s lesson was pretty easy but week two’s lesson gets a little confusing, so pay attention.

[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Drake[/lastfm]‘s new single “Take Care” featuring [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Rihanna[/lastfm]  is a sample of American Poet and Jazz musician  [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Gil Scott Heron [/lastfm]who is known mostly for spoken word poetry.

But wait, it doesn’t stop here. The actual song “I’ll Take of You” was written by vocalist [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Brook Benton [/lastfm]who never recorded the track which landed in the hands of Blues singer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bobby Blue Bland [/lastfm]who is responsible for bringing the song to the mainstream in 1959.

“I’ll Take Care of You” has been remade five different times by vocalists who all took the song in different directions. However [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Gil Scott Heron [/lastfm]added the piano based version in his February 2011 album release “We’re New Here” which [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Drake[/lastfm] sampled for  his version of “Take Care”.

[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Drake[/lastfm]‘s “Take Care” sits at #50 on Hip Hop/R&B Chart as well as the #49 on the billboard Hot 100. He is currently getting ready for his 17 City Club Paradise Tour which will kick off on Valentines Day in Miami.

Can you hear the similarities? Ok class is officially over! See you next week!
