What up? It’s Kyle from the AMP-Tourage here to let you know about a new segment on our website called “Pick a Page.” What is it you ask?

Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Basically, I found some old magazines that date back all the way to 1998 and are filled with pop culture gold I tell you, GOLD!

There are articles that will take you back to the good ol’ days of when Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were just getting on their feet and when Eminem wasn’t even a twinkle in our eye yet!

These mags have been passed around the station and we have found some great articles that reminded us of when we were first introduced to Christina Aguilera and Sean Fanning. You know Sean Fanning, the dude who created Napster.

What we want you to do, is throw out a page number to us from any of the magazines in the picture above and we’ll reply with a bit of pop culture history that is on that page.

Everything from Katy Perry’s first interview about how she “Kissed a Girl” to the evolution of Youtube could pop up.

It’s the ultimate throwback to some of your favorite AMP artists a great way to learn something new, or just read for nostalgic reasons to kill some time while you sit at work.

Tara from promotions got us started. She chose page 35 from an Entertainment Weekly magazine dating back to 2001.

Of course there was A LOT of fun facts on this page but here is the one that stood out to us:

January 28, 2001

“Generations collide as Aerosmith, flanked by N’Sync and Britney take center stage at the Super Bowl half-time show. The game itself is among the lowest-rated Super Bowls in the last decade, but the half-time show attracts about 2 millions more viewers.”

Pretty crazy to think that 11 years later, Madonna performed and brought in an unbelievable 114 million viewers.

Holy moly!

Alright, now it’s your turn. Pick a page in the comments and tell us which magazine from the picture you want to use, and we will tell you some pop culture history!

Go!

alright Nicole! Page 20 was an AD so we pushed it to the closest article on page 28. Here is your page in Pop Culture History: This article was called “Back Story” and was a mini interview with Britain’s famed photographer David Bailey who shot pictures for the magazine for the 2006 Coachella Music Festival. Here were the questions and answers. Q: So you went to Coachella, Bailey? A: It didn’t come to me. Q: Did you see any bands play? A: No. I don’t really know about the bands that much. I really only listen to the blues. My assistants go, and they tell me about it. Q: Did you notice any differences between the British and American musicians? A: The Americans, they can be difficult. They’ve always got so many PR people and lawyers and chauffeurs and manicurists and bag-carriers. The British manage to get there by themselves. Though one English was a wanker, but I forget what he’s called. Q: James Blunt? A: No he was all right, James Blunt.

Great pic! This magazine is from March 2006, where they counted down 50 awesomely dead rock stars. Page 66 included #9 Bob Marley, #8 Kurt Cobain, #7 Jerry Garcia, #6 Jimi Hendrix.
Here are the facts from the portion on Bob Marley: 1945-1981. Cause of Death: Brain, lunch and live cancer. Reggae’s heavyweight champion had to wait for death to make him a U.S superstar. The week he was diagnosed with cancer, he played Madison Square Garden – opening for the Commodores. But the posthumous collection Legend has sold more than 17 million copies worldwide; his estate, controlled by his widow Rita and his 11 children, earns some $6 million a year; and his catalogue has been assessed at a value of $100 million.

This is from May 2000. Page 28 was the beginning of an article all about the show 90210. They lead with quotes from the stars regarding casting of the show: Gabrielle Carteris (Andrea) “I was living in New York, sleeping in a friend’s bed because I didn’t have money. It was a gigantic cattle call and I kept going back. I was up for both Andrea and Brenda.” Ian Ziering (Steve) “When I went to pick up the script, there was a stack of 50 scripts. I stole them all. Screw everybody else, I needed a job.” Jennie Garth (Kelly) “I got a part in Hull High [NBC's short-lived high school musical], then I heard about this. So I passed on Hull, which was the scariest thing in the world. I just knew Aaron Spelling was a great producer.” Brian Austin Green (David) “I didn’t know who [Spelling] was. I was always the kid who went into audtions like, “Is this going to cut into my skatboarding time?” Tori Spelling (Donna) “I heard about the show from my agent. She said ‘Your dad is doing it.’ I was like ‘I haven’t heard anything about it.’ I popped into his briefcase when he got home, and I was like, cool. I really wanted to play Andrea. I went under a different name, then I got the part of Donna – which I’m sure had something to do with my dad.”

What’s up Thor! On this particular page, it is the second half of a timeline for the teen genre that spans over five years. Here are a couple cool tidbits from that timeline. The page starts off with March 24, 1998: ‘Nsync release their self-titled debut. It goes on to sell 8.5 millon copies. May 31, 1998: Geri Halliwell quits the Spice Girls. September 1998: Total Request Live hosted by VJ Carson Daly, debuts on MTV and Gen-Y has it’s American Bandstand. January 12, 1999: After a month of that teasing video, Britney Spears’ …Baby One More Time arrives in stores and immediately shoots to No. 1.

HEY Nicole! On Page 53 ended up having an advertistment, we moved on over a page to find an article on Lauryn Hill’s new album titled “The Mis-education fo Lauryn Hill.” Remember that one? The album was released on August 25th 1998 and this article was taken from Issue #448 September 4, 1998. The article goes as follows: The juxtaposition of old and new schools continues on Hill’s first full solo album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, recorded during the Fugees’ ongoing hiatus. The disc is infused with African -American musical history. When Hill breaks into hardened patois, she recalls the moral fervency of Bob Marley. On the ballads, her buttery voice harks back to Roverta Flack ( surely not a coincidence, given the Fugees’ cover of “Killing Me Softly With His Song” ). Her use of harmony singers recalls ’60′s girl groups or Marley’s I-Threes. But like “the Sweetest Thing,” The Miseduction of Lauryn Hill is no quick withdrawal from the nostalgia bank. Easily flowing from singing to rapping, evoking the past while forging a future of her own. Hill has made an album of often astonishing power, strength, and feeling.

When the article was all said and done, Entertainment Weekly gave it an A rating. Looks like they new a great record when they heard one.

What’s up Chris? On Page 63 it taught you how to make a drink based off your favorite pop artist, and on page 63 it tells us how to make “The Kelly Clarkson: Country Lemonade Highball.” The ingrediants are 1 1/2 oz. of Vodka, 2oz. lemoade, 1/2oz. simple syrup, 6 minto leaves, and soda water. To make this you “muddle the mint leaves with the syrup. Add vodka, lemonade, and the ice, shake and strain over ice into a Collins glass. Then top it off with the soda water. The verdict from Blender’s Judges: Refreshing, bubbly, not too fullbodied. Sweet at first, but wtih a solid kick. . . Just like Kelly!

Hey Chris! This issue of GQ came out in August 2006 and Page 43 had an advertisement on it, so on page 44, it is a small interview titled “The Secrets of My Style by Lupe Fiasco.” Here are some points taken from the interview: Time is Not Money: I wear the $50 gold Casio to spit in teh face of ridiculous, overpriced jewelry. But I had a meeting with Pharrell recently, and he was like, “Yo, that’s what I’m talking about-I’m doing one of those for my line with Louis Vuitton!” I was like, “Please don’t! Just leave me be!”
MY Morning Routine: When I get up, I check this sneaker site Hypebeast.com – I’ve been a fan since it first started. (He now has a blog on it. ) Then I’ll write some rhymes, look at my collection of stuff, feel ashamed about how much stuff I have, and try to get back to becoming a minimalist, like Hiroshi Fujiwara.

Hey Grasso, so page 45 actually did have an ad, but it was a NyQuil one and not an Old Spice. This was taken from the Maxim of January 2011. So on page 46, it is a Q&A with the Washington Capitals Defenseman, Mike Green, about his other favorite sport, skateboarding. MAXIM: Wait a sec. Does your contract with the Capitals even allow you on a skateboard? MIKE: As long as I’m not dropping into half-pipes every day. It’s OK; I mean I do a lot worse things than that, so… MAXIM: But you’re more of a collector, right? MIKE: Yeah. I like to visit skate shops and buy the ones that look cool. I mount ‘em as wall art. I have about 50 total, and about 30-something boards hung up in the man-cave in my garage. MAXIM: Tell us about this one. MIKE: A skate clerk here in D.C. is a big Caps fan, and he painted this portrait of me. We’re going to produce a whole bunch of them for charity. MAXIM: You’re not known as a fighter, but lately you’re really tearing it up out there. Are we gonna see you fight more this year? MIKE: Yeah, absolutely. MAXIM: what would be the most effective weapon: a skateboard, a hockey stick, or one of your skates? MIKE: Oh, shit, a hockey stick for sure. I’d be able to do some damage with that. MAXIM: Where would you most like to skate in D.C.? MIKE: It would be cool to skate in the White House. Don’t be surprised if you read about me trying to get my skateboard in!
