AMP Music Minute: Chris Brown Twit-Fights With WWE Champ CM Punk, Adam Levine Names Paul McCartney As His Dream Mentor And Katy Perry Joins Icons With Billboard Record (page 3)
[photogallerylink id=148054 align=left] If you can’t beat them…oh? Well actually you can and have beat them. And “you” is Katy Perry, who is enjoying some more of that success she is so good at achieving.
We here at AMP just want to give a round of applause to the 27-year-old pop singer for outdoing herself yet again. The Grammy Awards stage is broadcast into millions of homes every year, and that exposure can be monumental in any musician’s career. For Katy, it meant meeting another Billboard record.
Sales of her new single, “Part of Me” debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 charts after she performed it for the first time on the Grammy stage. This marks only the 20th time in history that a track has opened up at the top spot due to a Grammy performance. The last time it happened was last year when Lady Gaga performed “Born This Way” and moved a remarkable 448,000 copies of the song in only a week. Katy topped her personal best week in sales, selling 411,000 units of the song.
Katy and Lady Gaga are in royal company when it comes to other artists that have reached this level of success in their careers. For instance, the late Whitney Houston and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Michael Jackson [/lastfm]both grace the list. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mariah Carey[/lastfm] has a couple songs on it, as does Britney Spears. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Celine Dion[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lauryn Hill[/lastfm], and[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Elton John[/lastfm] also have had peak moments post-Grammy shows.
It’s also notable that Katy Perry now has seven No. 1 singles. Could this be an icon in the making?
