Gotye Calls Glee Performance “Dinky and Wrong”

Seems that the Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses, and The Kings of Leon  aren’t the only artists underwhelmed by Glee’s interpretation of rock music.  Australian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Wally De Backer, better known as Gotye,  isn’t loving Glee’s version of his breakout hit “Somebody That I Used To Know”.

The #1 song was featured in the April 10th episode entitled “Big Brother”. You can take a look and listen to Darren Criss and Matt Bomer’s performance here.

In an interview with the Sunday Herald Sun, De Backer called the cover “dinky and wrong” among other things. He elaborates:

“They did such a faithful arrangement of the instruments but the vocals were that pop ‘Glee’ style, ultra dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense, like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box”

Pretty harsh criticism! De Backer may soon be putting his foot in his mouth.

After the Glee episode aired, “Somebody That I Used To Know” finally reached the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 after a whopping 15 weeks on the charts. That same week, Gotye performed on Saturday Night Live.

Coincidence? Maybe. This is the first time since 2000 that an Australian artist has topped the charts since Savage Garden’s “I Knew I Loved You”. Remember that song?
