In radio, there’s nothing more powerful than a hit song. You can go from being a virtual nobody to a household name within minutes, just ask Carly Rae Jepsen.

She had built up a following in her home country after placing 3rd on the 2007 season of Canadian Idol, but she didn’t become a global phenomenon until the release of her smash record, “Call Me Maybe.”

“It’s been quite the little adventure that this song has taken me on and my band,” Carly Rae Jepsen told 97.1 AMP Radio’s Carson Daly. “We’ve been kind of going at it for awhile in Canada and not sure how to break through in the States or the rest of the world. And with a little help from Justin, of course, Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun and them signing us to the label and introducing us within the last 5 months, we’ve just been kind of traveling the globe and spreading the music.”

Justin Bieber first heard “Call Me Maybe” on the radio when he was home for the holidays in Canada and couldn’t help but tweet about it to his millions of followers. That one tweet from Bieber ended up changing Jepsen’s entire life. The song went viral and before she knew it, Bieber and his manager Scooter Braun signed her as the first official artist to their label, Schoolboy Records.

“It was a little bit like a fairy tale, I’m not going to lie. I didn’t even want to believe it myself until I actually flew to L.A. and got to meet them [Justin Bieber and Scotter Braun] and then literally it was like pressing the go button and the next day it felt like we were in Europe.”

For the outsider looking in, it seems like Jepsen exploded onto the music scene faster than a speeding bullet, but the 26-year-old from Mission, British Columbia has been working towards this goal her entire life.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I was like literally 4 years old that I could be having a career in this and the song has kind of given us the opportunity to at least try for that and so far it’s already been just the most amazing experience of my life.”

Jepsen can credit YouTube as one of the reasons that “Call Me Maybe” has been so successful. Hundreds of people have posted covers, lip dubs, parodies, you name it. Justin Bieber and Katy Perry lip-synched to it, the Harvard baseball team jammed to the song in their team van, and even the band fun. covered it.

“I remember making those sort of homemade videos with my sister to our favorite songs and at the time, it wasn’t so easy to go immediately post it on YouTube, but it’s really cool to share it and see different ones.”

So which viral video is Jepsen’s favorite? She had to give a shout out to some boys from her hometown.

“There’s one particularly that I love, which is a couple of hometown boys from Abbotsford close to where I grew up, and they do this spoof video called ‘Obsessed with Call Me Maybe’ or ‘Addicted to Call Me Maybe’ and it’s these two macho football boys pretending that they don’t like the song, but then secretly dancing to it all the time.”

You can watch the video below, and while it’s hilarious, we’ll forewarn you that it does contain explicit language:
