Carson and all of us here on the morning show have been keeping tabs on America’s Got Talent, especially since controversial radio personality Howard Stern became a judge this season.
A lot of great stories have come out of the reality series competition, including the goth opera singer Surfer Stephen told us about yesterday, but now a new scandal is emerging.
What started out as a touching audition by an injured soldier has now turned into a battle of he said, she said.
Poe told the judging panel he spent 14 years in the military, but after getting hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan, he developed a speech impediment.
As part of his therapy, his doctor told him to try singing in the shower and that’s when Poe discovered he had a knack for performing…or at least that’s what he’s claiming.
After the episode aired, his ex-wife, Shannon Conroy, took to the press to shoot down the sob story. She says he was never injured in battle and she’s backed up by the Minnesota Army National Guard. They say that while he was discharged in 2011 for a medical disability, it was not due to Poe getting wounded in combat.
Even more shocking, Conroy says Poe has been singing for nearly his entire life and was the front man for an alternative rock band.
But wait…there’s more! Poe gave AGT producers a photo of himself in uniform and they aired it during his audition, except it wasn’t actually a photo of him! Turns out the soldier pictured is Staff Sgt. Norman Bone. Poe maintains that it was an honest mistake. He says he was in a hurry to send the photo to producers and didn’t realize the mix-up.
Despite all the negative press, Poe is not only standing by his story, but he is also planning to sue his ex-wife for accusing him of lying.
As for his future on America’s Got Talent, that’s up in the air right now. Poe made it through to the next round and we can’t wait to see what the judges will have to say about all this drama!
