KROQ.com caught up with French DJ David Guetta, the world’s most popular DJ (as voted by DJ Mag), at the Electric Daisy Carnival held June 8-10 at the Las Vegas Speedway.
“Our music has been exploding so much in the last year and there’s so much awareness in America,” says Guetta. “People are starting to know what a DJ is, what a producer is, and it’s wonderful. It’s unbelievable to see how our culture grew up and is getting more respect, and more excitement from the media…it’s incredible.”
It’s been almost a year since your last album came out. Is there anything new on the horizon?
“I’m probably gonna make a re-pack because I have a few really, really strong songs that I have, but at the same time I’m not really ready to make a new album. In the moment I’m also focusing a lot on just creating electronic beats. I started a label called Jack Back Records that has absolutely no ambition of selling records or making any money or having a record on the radio. It’s just purely electronic beats.”
‘We made our first record with Nicky Romero, who I think is one of the most exciting DJ/Producers in the moment, and we made a record together called Metropolis. That was the first release. I have like 7 really, really hot tracks that I made that are just purely club records.”
Guetta continues, “My music is always going to be for the DJs because this is where I’m coming from. What made me famous really was being able to cross over and be able to have a record that makes you dance, but also makes you emotional like a real song.”

“At the same time, sometimes I was making beats only for myself that I would play and some DJs would ask me ‘Wait, what’s that record? Can I have it?’ So I decided to start the label so I could release those electronic beats that could not be played on the radio, could not really be on an album because now my albums are selling millions… so I cannot go totally underground, it would be weird. So that’s why I started the label.”
You’ve been voted the world’s most popular DJ, does that add any pressure on you or does it motivate you to stay at the top?
Of course I was very happy at that moment. It’s a great honor, especially at a moment when I was releasing such a big crossover album. To see that… to see my original fans and the DJs voting for me as #1 DJ is very important because it shows that I manage to keep that balance in what I do. But the truth is I see it every day. That’s my relationship with the party people that are coming to my shows, so of course it’s an honor to be voted #1 DJ. There’s nothing that is more real than what I’m going to do on stage today.
