Well this is comforting.
We’re always hearing about the airports with the most delays or worst customer service, but here’s a new one for you…
According to Airfarewatchdog, three of the country’s scariest airports are located right here in SoCal!
Can you guess which ones made the list?
San Diego International Airport (Lindbergh Field)
First off, we have San Diego International Airport. Situated just blocks away from downtown, things can get a little crowded.
Add to that mountains to the north and east, Mexican airspace to the south, and tailwinds coming in from the west. This sometimes forces “nose-to-nose takeoffs and landings.”
Catalina Airport
Next up, we have the Catalina Airport, which isn’t too surprising considering it’s on top of a mountain and on an island. The high elevation often causes downdrafts and turbulence.
The runway dips downward on both sides, so a pilot on one end can’t see if there’s any planes on the other end. It’s also exposed to harsher weather, so there’s a lot of wear and tear on the runway.
John Wayne Airport
The final airport hits a little too close to home…John Wayne in Santa Ana! Airfarewatchdog compares taking off at John Wayne to a shuttle liftoff! Noise restrictions require pilots to “ascend at full throttle and then abruptly cut back their engines.” Yikes!
Well there you go! Keep that in mind when planning your next getaway!
