As EDM artists continue to crash the pop music scene, the explosion of wannabe DJs has gotten to the point where even hyper-smart IFC comedy series Portlandia effectively skewered the culture with the hilarious sketch where literally everyone is a DJ called “Wanna Come To My DJ Night?”
A new video from last weekend’s free Virgin Mobile FreeFest in Baltimore showing rapidly rising dance music superstar Skrillex giving a tutorial on how to rock the decks to none less than billionaire and Virgin Group Chairman Richard Branson.
In the quick clip, Skrillex is seen messing around with his gear as Branson looks on smiling, eagerly emulating Skillex’s moves by jabbing away at the buttons on a CD player, much to the delight of Skrillex.
This year’s fourth annual Virgin Mobile FreeFest (which featured appearances from Jack White, M83, Trampled By Turtles and Skrillex) gave away tens of thousands of free tickets in less than two minutes when they were released back in August. Additional tickets were sold at price points of $10, $20, $40 and a special “Freemium” package of $49.50 which included early admission and additional souvenirs. The money generated through these “karma” tickets is all earmarked for charity, with the festival’s head of brand marketing telling the Baltimore Sun that they’ve raised more than $600,000 and 77,000 volunteer hours toward the fight against youth homelessness over the FreeFest’s four years of existence.
