Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation this year to approve a ban on plastic bags at supermarket checkout lines, handing a major victory to clean water advocates who are trying to reduce the amount of trash clogging landfills, the region’s waterways, and the ocean.

Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That’s over one million plastic bags used per minute.

We consume 190 billion sodas, juice drinks, and other beverages packaged in plastic or glass bottles and aluminum cans each year. That’s over 650 containers per person per year or almost two containers a day for every person living in the United States.

Scientists estimate that every square mile of ocean contains about 46,000 pieces of floating plastic. At least 267 different species are known to have suffered from entanglement or ingestion of plastic marine debris.

It drives me crazy when I see people littering because it just goes right into the storm runoffs on the street and drains right into the ocean.

I see the result first hand when I’m in the water surfing. Some days it’s clean and other days it’s not, especially after a storm when the garbage you’re careless with ends up in the waves.

On to today’s Viral Video of the Day, I’m convinced nobody hates plastic more than this kid. His skills are pretty stellar, I have to admit. Number 20 was a no look backhand slice. I mean come on, you couldn’t pull that move off.

Seriously though, do your part to try and cut down on your plastic and waste in general. Let’s leave a better place for the young ones.
