After making the big announcement a few months ago, Carson’s buddy Jimmy Kimmel is finally making the leap to 11:35pm this week!

For the past 10 years, Kimmel’s held down the 12:05am spot for ABC, but the head honchos decided the promote him to the coveted time slot instead of airing Nightline.

This puts him in direct competition with late night heavyweights David Letterman and Jay Leno.

Now, the titans of television are kicking it up a notch in order to reign supreme.

How, you ask? NBC execs announced Sunday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour that Leno’s contract was just extended past 2014.

Also, to get a head start on everyone else, the Tonight Show will now begin a whole minute earlier at 11:34pm.

This is getting cutthroat!

As for Letterman, the normally interview-shy host appeared on Oprah’s Next Chapter last night talking his storied rivalry with Leno.

While Letterman says Leno is one of the funniest guys he’s ever known, he also calls the Tonight Show comic insecure…ouch!

Carson has a very late talk show of his own, so he and Producer Angie discussed who they think has the edge in the late night wars.
