This week on Glee the kids of New Directions reveal their musical guilty pleasures. And some should definitely be more embarrassed than others about the songs they play when no one else is around.
Like maybe Sam and Blaine who channel Wham! for their version of “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.” Fueled by those infectious snaps and deep cries of “jitterbug,” the two guys add a little soul to the pop song and make it hard not to throw on one of those old “Choose Life” t-shirts.
But we’re proud that Sam felt comfortable enough with himself to admit his love for Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana.” His version of the tragic nightclub tale will certainly get the conga line going as he croons, “music and passion were always the fashion,” alongside a bevy of lovely ladies.
Blaine, who apparently is feeling especially guilty about his musical indulgences, returns with his version of “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins. He sounds like he’s working through something as he sings the sparse ballad, even sounding a little choked up as he says “ But is able to get up the energy to belt out the big ending. Phil would certainly be proud.
And who would be ashamed of liking the Spice Girls? The ladies of New Directions channel their inner-Spice for “Wannabe” and make us really, really wanna zigazig ha.
But Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative,” well maybe Jake should feel a little silly about liking that one. He does master Brown’s attitude on the ego-fueled song that asks, “why don’t they just let me live?” Jake can certainly do what he wants to do.
It’s the split performance of ABBA’s “Mama Mia” though that truly encapsulates the guilty pleasures theme. While Rachel, Santana and Kurt sing along in New York, the New Directions gang recreate ABBA’s original video for the song. We’re talking white jumpsuits, glittery gold platforms and lots of feathers.
