But being the awesome guy that he is, he found a few minutes to call us from NYC to give us a full update! What a class act!
“It was an enormous return for The Voice,” Carson said of yesterday’s debut ratings. “We’re thinking as high as maybe a 5.0, which by NBC standards of what they’ve gotten recently, I mean…There’s going to be a lot of happy campers at NBC today.”
“When we shot the blind auditions, it’s almost hard to tell, but [Shakira] was maybe 5 or 6 months pregnant. She’s feisty, but she’s a great addition,” Carson explained. “I think like Jennifer Lawrence and like Zooey Deschanel, America and women, in particular, are going to slowly fall in love with Shakira.”
“[Usher] brings this kind of gravitas to the show,” he added. “And it’s not to knock on Christina or Cee Lo, they’re both great too. These are like, as we always say, the Iron Chefs. Once you sit in that chair, it’s yours for life. Good pinch hitting last night.”
The premiere included several emotional back stories. Vedo, whose mother is diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, had Producer Angie tearing up.
“Booker, Angie doesn’t have tear ducts! She’s not capable of producing tears!” Carson exclaimed. “I had to be in that room with Vedo’s mom, who has stage four cancer, and I’m in the room with her and all I’m thinking is, one of those stupid chairs better turn around!”
One of the other bright spots of the night included sixteen-year-old country singer Danielle Bradbery, who ended up joining Team Blake. Carson chatted with Shelton this morning on the Today show about her exciting performance.
“He looked at iTunes this morning and he was like, you know that girl’s good and the impact of the show when she did a Taylor Swift song, which by and large, a lot of people already own. They’ve already bought the song and yet, it was like #1 on iTunes, her version of that song,” Carson said. “That little girl is 16, had her first performance, and did something really special.”
“She did kind of a sassed-out R&B version of Christina’s ‘What A Girl Wants’ and she’s extraordinary. By the way, she’s from Pasadena, so I went to her house, interviewed her parents. Her parents have like a home studio and she was born to do this.”
When Hill sang at Jackson’s funeral, tons of record companies called her up proposing big deals, but she didn’t feel right capitalizing on the superstar’s death.
“She just sat tight. She waited and then we found her and she’s using The Voice as like this kind of coming out party and she did great.”
“The next thing I know, at like 8 o’clock, I’m talking about same sex marriage and I’m talking about Tiger Woods and all these issues. It was cool and then they were like, jump over here. I jumped in on the Blake Shelton sort of hang. It’s just been fun,” Carson shared. “It’s like grown up TRL over there. I felt right at home.”
