No matter what kind of week you’ve had, at least you’re not Marissa Powell, the beauty queen who completely blanked during the Q&A portion of the Miss USA competition.
Her deer in headlights moment instantly went viral, but to her credit, she’s being a great sport about it.
She appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to explain herself.
“I was so excited to be in the top five. I have all of my friends and family out there and I hear the question and I don’t process it and I just start talking! And once I started speaking I couldn’t take it back, so I was like, ‘Well, I better just smile and, uh, education!'”
We’re not feeling too badly for Powell because at the end of the day, everybody’s talking about her, not Miss Connecticut, the young woman who actually won the pageant. Producer Angie brought up an interesting point that could completely destroy the beauty pageant circuit as we know it!
“This might be the new trend with the girls,” she told Carson. “‘I’m going to make a terrible answer and get all over the place. I’m on Jimmy Kimmel!'”
TODAY show anchor Matt Lauer gave Powell a second chance to answer the question on live TV, which focused on the gender wage gap. This time, she didn’t crash and burn.
“This is not OK,” she explained. “It needs to be equal pay for equal work. It’s hard enough already to earn a living, and it shouldn’t be harder just because you’re a woman.”
