When Jimmy Kimmel first announced that Kanye West would be joining him on his late night talk show after unleashing a barrage of harassing tweets at comedian just a couple weeks ago, many assumed it was all one big publicity stunt.
West and Kimmel quickly put that rumor to rest during an enlightening nearly half-hour long discussion.
“I’ve never done a publicity stunt in my life,” West told Kimmel. “I don’t follow rules of, like, normal celebrity. I don’t do publicity stunts period.”
Their so-called “rap feud” began when Kimmel aired a bit spoofing an interview West did with BBC.
“As we were writing it there was a frustration that was getting out,” West explained, regarding his angry tweets. “But also they were really funny to me and I just thought it was so amazing that I was saying this in real time, in real life. With my position, because people would be so scared to say anything as soon as you’re a celebrity you’re not allowed to say anything anymore. But to just completely wild out?”
Kimmel didn’t shy away from uncomfortable moments, including telling Yeezy that many people think he’s a jerk.
“I’m totally weird and totally honest and I’m totally inappropriate sometimes, and the thing is for me not to say I’m not a genius I’d be lying to you and to myself,” West responded.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Kanye interview without a rant about art and culture. Yeezy explained his take on how he has impacted the world.
“It’s about truth, it’s bout information, it’s about awesomeness … Taste, culture, art … just the quality of life. This is what I’m here to do. So when I compare myself to Steve Jobs, or Walt Disney, Howard Hughes, David Stern, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Jesus, I’m saying these are my heroes. These are people that I look up to. This is the type of impact I want to make on the Earth.”
What began as a strange rivalry ended with a full-on bromance. Kimmel came up with a hilarious peace offering: leather jogging pants for Kanye’s infant daughter, North West.
