From Carson Daly
With less than a week to go until the release of Prism, Katy Perry surprised all her KatyCats with the brand new single, “Unconditionally,” bright and early Wednesday morning.
The 4-minute track showcases a much more vulnerable side than her power anthem “Roar.”
“I love it. I think that’s Katy Perry at her best,” he raved. “When she’s singing that emotionally-charged mid-tempo like that, it reminds me of ‘Teenage Dream’ or ‘Part of Me,’ some of her biggest records. When she does it, you can feel her. There’s a sense of urgency to it…It sounds timeless.”
“Unconditionally” was produced by pop legends Dr. Luke and Max Martin, who both worked with Katy on her most-successful album to date, Teenage Dream.
“I can’t imagine anyone could follow up to her last record, yet we’re seeing early signs with songs like ‘Roar,’ ‘Dark Horse,’ Carson added. “The things that we’re hearing are quite diverse and then we get this emotionally-charged ballad, seemingly written about John Mayer, but who knows? But I buy into it every time. It’s a great-sounding song.”
