The modeling industry is cutthroat, especially when it comes to aging.
Most women reach the end of their careers by their late 20s, so when Elliott Sailors was faced with dwindling offers, she came up with an unconventional idea to reinvent her career.
With the support of her husband, the beauty shaved off her hair and began to work as a male model.
Sailors used to get frustrated with her strong jawline and large forehead, but these features work to her advantage as an androgynous model.
“I actually had the idea quite awhile ago and I just think it’s something new and fresh,” Sailors explained.
The 31-year-old revealed that chopping off her locks was surprisingly emotional.
“Even just speaking to the guy at the front desk I got the tears in my eyes. When I sat down with the barber, I told him, you know, ‘I’m gonna cry, but I really want to do this.’”
The response to her decision has widely varied, but Sailors is receiving encouragement from some unlikely candidates.
“My mom, for one, is someone who doesn’t agree with it,” she said. “It’s actually the men who have been amazingly supportive about this. The male models, all that I’ve met, are like, ‘Man, that’s cool!’”
So is the drastic transformation working or just a gimmick?
“Well, I’m on the TODAY show! So there’s that!” Sailors laughed. “It is opening more doors and more options.”
