He’s the first in more than 40 years to host the late night talk show from New York City. During Fallon’s opening monologue, he got a bit sentimental.
“I really don’t know how I got here,” Fallon admitted.”I remember asking my parents to stay up late to watch Johnny Carson. I can just think there’s some kid asking their parents to stay up to watch me.”
If the early ratings are any indication, Fallon has nothing to worry about. He matched Conan O’Brien’s Tonight Show debut numbers and bested Jay Leno’s ratings when the comedian returned to the talk show following the Conan/Leno debacle.
Fallon brought pulled out all the stops for his premiere episode, including a parade of A-listers who showed up to poke a little fun at the SNL alum.
In one of the night’s most buzzed-about bits, Fallon explains that one of his friends bet him $100 that he’d never host the Tonight Show. During Monday’s broadcast, he asked his friend to pay up.
Turns out it wasn’t just one of his buddies. Robert DeNiro, Tina Fey, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, Seth Rogen, Lindsay Lohan, Mariah Carey, Joan Rivers, Tracey Morgan, Stephen Colbert, Mike Tyson, and many more all made an appearance to pay their dues.
Will Smith popped by as Fallon’s first official sit-down guest, but the duo couldn’t stay seated for long.
They put on their dancing shoes for the “Evolution of Hip Hop Dancing.”
