Carson Daly’s New Music Pick: Amerigo Gazaway’s Mos Def/Marvin Gaye Mashup, “Yasiin Gaye”

Carson’s always on the lookout for new music and today’s gem comes courtesy of an artist/producer named Amerigo Gazaway.

It’d be wrong to call his album, Yasiin Gaye: The Departure (Side One) simply a mashup. Instead, it’s a seamless blend between the music of rapper Mos Def (now known as Yasiin Bey) and soul singer Marvin Gaye.

“Amerigo was able to get the original recordings from Marvin Gaye. He got the multi-tracks, which means he was able to rebuild and deconstruct the samples from Marvin Gaye’s Motown classics and he could re-orchestrate all the instrumentation, so the production sounds completely new,” Carson explained.

Earlier this morning, Carson featured the album’s lead single, “Inner City Travellin’ Man,” a mix of Mos Def’s 1997 song “Travelin’ Man” and Gaye’s 1971 hit, “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler).”

“I walk into somebody’s apartment, or I get into somebody’s car, or I walk into somebody’s place of work in their cubicle and they’re bumping that? I mean, immediately we have a connection.”

“Shout out to Amerigo Gazaway for putting this together,” Carson continued.
