It’s the second week of the battle rounds, so you can imagine the competition is more than a little cutthroat.

“It’s starting to heat up,” Carson explained earlier this morning.

Only one can survive each sing off, which turned out to be quite the heartbreaker for Team Usher’s Madilyn Paige and Tanner James.

The pair’s adorable chemisty couldn’t be denied during their performance of Taylor Swift & Ed Sheeran’s “Everything Has Changed.”

“Girls, if you’ve seen the movie The Notebook, it really was Notebook-esque on stage between two of the youngest in the competition. They were absolutely adorable — Madilyn Paige and Tanner James,” Carson said during today’s recap. “Many of you are asking this morning, are they dating? I don’t know the answer to that. I don’t think they are.”

“And I know girls don’t like the ‘cute’ word, but in this case, it really was the cutest thing you’ve ever seen,” he continued. “It was sweet, it was nice.”

Adam Levine agreed with Carson’s assessment.

“That was like watching golden retriever puppies frolic through fields of wheat during the sunset or something. That was like, cute overload! So romantic and sweet.”

Coach Usher was forced to make a tough decision, bringing this Romeo and Juliet tale to a bittersweet end.

“Tanner, you’re like a heartthrob right now. Madilyn, I felt like you arrived and there was something incredible about this performance. I was really just kind of caught up in it.”

When push came to shove, Usher chose to keep 16-year-old Madilyn. Tanner was not stolen by any of the other coaches, but there’s no hard feelings for him.

He posted a photo of himself and his duet partner on Instagram with the caption, “@MadilynPaige_ It truly was a pleasure to sing on that stage with you. I know I’m a better person because of that experience!”

All together now…. AWWWWWWWWW!!!

If you aren’t too heartbroken, you can watch the conclusion of the battle rounds tonight at 8/7c on NBC.
