Who Should Replace David Letterman? Carson Daly Weighs In

David Letterman shocked the world yesterday when he suddenly announced he would be retiring in 2015.

Dave has been on air for a whopping 34 years, the most of any late night host.

Obviously, CBS has some big shoes to fill and the search begins today.

Carson suggested a few frontrunners earlier this morning.

“I mean, the usual suspects are on the list, right? There’s Chelsea Handler, whose deal is up. Leno’s sitting there. Conan’s deal is up at TBS. Jimmy [Kimmel’s] deal is up next year at ABC,” Carson told Producer Angie. “So there’s all the usual suspects floating around.”

“If you’re CBS, in my opinion, you throw every dollar at Jon Stewart,” he continued. “He just seems like the guy. I don’t think he’ll ever do it. He’s at cable and makes more money than God.”

Some people are calling for the return of Jay Leno, but Carson doesn’t think he’s a likely choice.

“That’s just like the Yankees going to get a 42-year-old pitcher to try and win this year, which I don’t see CBS doing. Leno could probably go three more years or five more years, but it doesn’t make sense in a landscape that’s invested in clearly in the 18-34 demographic.”

Jerry Seinfeld and Neil Patrick Harris are two of the more non-traditional ideas floating around and while Carson sang NPH’s praises, he thinks the actor may have other opportunities on the horizon.

“[Jerry] Seinfeld and Neil Patrick Harris seem to be the two non-traditional hosts…[Neil Patrick Harris] is in New York, he’s alarmingly talented, could easily do the job, he’s done it before. People love him. There’s rumors that when Michael Strahan took the GMA job more recently, he says he’s going to do both, but people want to see Neil Patrick Harris on with Kelly Ripa. He’s just a name that everybody really, really likes and deservedly so.”

And what about Craig Ferguson? He’s been hosting The Late Late Show after Dave since 2005.

“There used to be a time when Craig Ferguson would be the obvious, Carson said. “Every headline, if you just google David Letterman, you filter to news, names start to pop out, but not many of them are Craig Ferguson, who is somebody who certainly deserves to be in that conversation. My god, he’s spent how many years now as the successor?”
