The Comedy Central host, who appeared as a guest on David Letterman’s show Tuesday, once turned down an internship opportunity when he was just a college student.
“In 1986, my girlfriend in college got an appointment to interview for an internship at the old show [Late Night with David Letterman] over at NBC,” Colbert explained. “She came here for the internship, and she was in the room, getting the interview, and I’m just waiting in the hallway, like a boob.”
A staff member then asked Colbert if he was next in line for an interview. He told them here was only there to support a friend, but they offered to chat with him anyway. After a 15-minute conversation, he was offered the gig, but his girlfriend was denied!
“The relationship did not last!” Colbert laughed.
So why did he turn down the offer?
“Because you did not pay people,” he admitted to Letterman. “It’s an expensive city! Dave, I’ve gotta ask. The next job I’m taking here, that pays, right? Because I’ve already signed.”
