Interview: Jennifer Lopez Tells Carson Daly What Fans Can Expect From Her New Album

"I've grown as a person emotionally. But I've also grown in my taste in music. I've grown as a human being. I've grown vocally. There's just a lot that's happened."

It’s been 15 years since Jennifer Lopez released her first single, “If You Had My Love,” and in less than two weeks, her lasting impact on pop music will finally be formally recognized.

Lopez will be honored with the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards, airing Sunday, May 18 on ABC.

She is the fourth artist and first-ever woman to receive the award, joining past honorees Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder and Prince.

The 44-year-old mother of two spoke live Tuesday morning with Carson Daly about her latest accolade.

“You get the phone call and it’s kind of like, you know, you’re going to get the Billboard Icon Award. You’re the fourth person to get it…It’s kind of like, ‘Really? Okay, I’m showing up for that!'”

Lopez is also gearing up for the release of her eighth studio album, A.K.A. Scheduled to drop June 17, the record features collaborations with Pitbull, Iggy Azalea, T.I. and many more.

“All my albums, Carson, over the years, have always kind of been a snapshot or a reflection of me at that time,” Lopez explained. “This is no different. The only thing is that I went through major changes in the last couple of years, so it’s a little bit of a different me than all the other albums I did…I’ve changed, I’ve grown, I like to think for the better. You know? And you see that on this record.”

“I’ve grown, you know, as a person emotionally,” she continued. “But I’ve also grown in my taste in music. I’ve grown as a human being. I’ve grown vocally. There’s just a lot that’s happened.”

What can you expect to hear on A.K.A.? A little bit of everything, according to J. Lo.

“You know me. I dabble in everything. I do hip hop. I do pop. I do R&B, mid-tempo, so you’re going to find all of that on the album. There’s a little bit of dance. It’s all of it. It’s very me. And I got to collaborate with a lot of great artists, French Montana, T.I, Tyga, Pitbull is on this of course. There’s a lot of fun stuff on it, but a lot of serious stuff on it. It’s like me! Fun and serious at the same time. ”

Until the release of A.K.A., Lopez is keeping busy this spring as a judge on American Idol. She returned to the singing competition show after taking a break last year.

“The mentoring, sharing your experiences about being in the music business. You don’t get to do that anywhere,” Lopez said of Idol and The Voice. “It’s great to mentor the kids and be able to impart whatever bits of experience and advice you have for them. And help them grow as an artist. It’s very rewarding. And I learn a lot about myself as a performer as I’m doing it. I enjoy it a lot.”
