If you haven’t heard the song ‘Animals’ by Martin Garrix yet, then we may have to question whether you really listen to AMP Radio or not. The smash single has sold over 500,000 units in the U.S alone, which makes it a certified gold record, he’s got over 2.8 million fans on Facebook (as of publishing), and he’s playing some of the biggest music festivals around the world. Did we mention he’s also the youngest DJ to ever go #1 on Beat Port?
In addition to all of that greatness, we’ve been spinning his song ‘Animals’ quite a bit and the 17 year old DJ/Producer came by Red Bull Sound Space at AMP Radio to talk with us about his recent success.
He sat down to chat with McCabe, and was nothing short of wonderful.
We spoke to him about many topics, including his upcoming performance at the coveted music festival, Coachella.
We’re excited to see him play the festival, and while we already know his fans are going to go crazy for his set, it was fun to hear about how his friends and family react to his huge fan base and his ever-growing audience at shows.
“I love to hang out with friends and family. I also take them to shows with me. I brought my mom to a festival I was playing in Panama where there were 30 thousand people. And she was actually on stage, nobody could really see her, but she saw what I was seeing. Her eyes were like this [motions big eyes filled with excitement]”
Speaking of his parents, it was amazing to hear him tell the story of their support early on. It’s hard to believe that any parent would give the ok to leave regular schooling to pursue a career in the world of music production, but his parents did, and for that we are thankful.
So with all of his success, who are some of his dream collabs? He’s hoping to work with Ellie Goulding, Skylar Grey and Lana Del Rey for vocals, and AMP Radio artist Calvin Harris as more of a co-production scenario. He’s also currently working with famed DJ Tiesto, which is pretty amazing.
Lucky for him, he has some great people in the DJ world to look up to, and many of them are giving him sage advice in regards to haters, sneaky people in the business, and fame in general.
“Tiesto said to me ‘Just always remember how much people like that you’re doing.”
We like what you’re doing Martin Garrix, and so do the millions of fans who support you every day.
