On being a die hard Lakers Fan…

“I don’t hate anything. I mean, hate is a strong word. I don’t hate the Clippers. I don’t have like, Blake Griffin voodoo dolls! These are talented and incredible basketball players that I admire and love. If you’re a Lakers fan, you’re not allowed to like the Clippers…I will never enter the building if it’s not purple and gold. I’m not going to a Clippers game.”

On the LA Kings and hockey…

“I’ve never been to a hockey game, which I need to get on. I’m not a big hockey guy, I mean, I grew up with basketball all the time. I’m a huge sports fan and I need to go. I’m kind of sad I didn’t get to go see the Kings in the Stanley Cup because it’s such an amazing thing and to see them being so successful now, it’s wonderful. And listen: I love sports. I love L.A, obviously you know that. I don’t love the Clippers, but you know what? I love the Lakers and how ’bout them Spurs, huh?!”

On the current stage of his career…

“I’m having such a great time and I’m also one of those people, I think, who can actually enjoy all of this. You know, people get very caught up and wrapped up in their lives, you know, I’m so busy beyond belief and it’s super stressful at times, but the great thing is I genuinely, with as much sincerity as I can muster for you guys, tell you how awesome this is. Even through the exhaustion, like, the overworking and the insanity, I still love my life and I love what I do and if I didn’t, I wouldn’t do it and I never lose sight of that because I’m such a lucky person. I get to wake up and do what I love every day and whatever. So it’s a little stressful sometimes, big deal. You know, who’s going to cry for me on that? It’s great. I love it. I’m going to miss it when it’s not like this. It’s not going to be at this pace forever, mostly because I’d probably just keel over.”

On the state of the latest album…

“It’s 90 percent done, so, there’s a couple things that are almost finished, that need to be finished. I’m so happy. It’s a great record and as far as the band is concerned, we gotta find our little windows to get in there and do it. It’s really difficult, being as busy as I am, but it’s kind of a good thing because you don’t sit in the studio for fifteen hours a day and, you know, cry over your music. You get in there when you can and you know you have to make it happen.”

On the importance of his record label…

I’m lucky to be with people that I am. I absolutely love the people working the recordd. It’s really important. You have to have the bigger machine helping promote your album. In the press I tend to give the record business a bit of a flogging. But I love my label. I love the people working on it. But it’s super important. There are a lot of other things that are important too, but At the end of the day, if no one is putting your record out there and helping you get the word out, then you’re in trouble. And I think its just as important as it is now as it ever has been.

On choosing singles for the album…

We choose the singles. But we also aren’t stupid. We present the singles, and we say ‘here are the singles, these are the songs we think would be big hits.” But we listen to people. I play the song for everyone I can find that I love and I respect. I play the song for kids. Kids know everything. That’s the secret. They have the best taste in music. They have the best ears, because they aren’t corrupted by anything. We listen to the reaction from the label and friends..we do a lot of our own research.

On moving into the world of acting and his new movie…

“And then there’s the fact that I’m in this movie with amazing actors. I’m a fan of every single person. I couldn’t have handpicked a group of people I love and respect. It’s kind of dream-esque and I’m very lucky. I know it sounds like I’m being extra humble or something, but, I kind of am.  Listen, I’m not that humble about music, but I’m very humble about acting because I don’t know how to do it yet.”
