Unusual Snack Flavors: The Good, The Bad, & The Surprisingly Tasty!
By Caitlyn Trudnich
These days, when it comes to flavor combinations, anything goes! Shows like Frankenfood and Bizarre Foods, and the annual Orange County Fair highlight creative culinary concoctions and cultural delicacies that are anything but typical.
Recently, the leaders of the potato chip world, Frito-Lay’s, have yet again come up with several new, and er-interesting, flavors for snack-loving fans to vote on! This year’s flavors include: Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese, Cappuccino, Wasabi Ginger, and Mango Salsa.
With the food industry constantly coming up with different flavor combinations, let’s take a look at some of today’s unusual snacks!
Anything with Bacon
Bacon is arguably one of the most popular foods. People go nuts for bacon being included in their favorite dishes and snacks, and in today’s world, bacon can be found in almost anything. From candy, like chocolate covered bacon, currently found at the Orange Country Fair, to ice cream, like Coolhaus‘ Brown Candied Bacon flavor (read on for more flavors!) to condiments, like the curious Baconnaise. People love the salty and savory taste of bacon.
Oh My Oreos!
The favorite cookie treat has transformed itself from its humble beginnings of the original cookies and cream flavor, into many different delectable tastes! Oreo‘s interesting limited-edition flavors have included Root Beer Float, Limeade, Watermelon, Marshmallow Crispy, and Candy Corn. Internationally, bold flavors such as Orange and Mango (Japan), and Dulce de Leche and Banana (Argentina), have been introduced. You can currently find Oreo flavors like Mint, Peanut Butter, Banana Split, and Birthday Cake available in stores.
Pour It Up!
In today’s alcohol market, new flavors of booze are constantly being introduced! Forget your typical raspberry vodka or peppermint schnapps, the bolder the flavor, the better for creating a delicious beverage. For example, Smirnoff has created vodka in flavors such as Espresso, Root Beer Float, Wild Honey, Iced Cake, Marshmallow, Caramel, and Whipped Cream. They also have created popular Light Sorbet flavors, including Pineapple Coconut, Mango Passion Fruit, Raspberry Pomegranate, and Lemon.
Soft Drink Flavors That Pop
Internationally, unusual and different soft drink flavors are a major hit. In Japan, Pepsi introduced for a limited-time, flavors including Salty Watermelon and Ice Cucumber. They recently even have created a Pepsi flavored Cheetos, which is quickly gaining popularity. Coca-Cola recently created the Coca-Cola “Freestyle” soda fountain, popping up in many movie theaters and restaurants. This machine allows customization of your Coke, with an impressive 127 different flavors! Special flavors include Orange Coke, Raspberry Coke, Sprite with Strawberry, Sprite with Peach, and more!
Mmmm, Ear Wax
The magical world of Harry Potter introduced us to the favorite candy of wizards, Bernie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans, which includes flavors such as Black Pepper, Booger, Dirt, Earwax, Sausage, Rotten Egg, Vomit, and more. Well today, you can actually find these interesting treats available in the muggle world through jelly bean company, Jelly Belly. The famous candy company also has its own line of weird flavors, called BeanBoozled. This pack of jelly beans includes duos of flavors in the same color, however one flavor is pleasant, while the other is not! For example, you may think you’re about to eat a Caramel Corn flavor, and instead have chosen the Moldy Cheese jelly bean. Yikes! Other prankster flavors include Lawn Clippings, Toothpaste, Canned Dog Food, Baby Wipes, Stinky Socks, and more.
We All Scream, For Ice Cream
With the culinary world constantly pushing the boundaries of combining sweet and savory, ice cream is the perfect venue to create new and different flavor combinations, Coolhaus Gourmet Ice Cream in Culver City, creates some extraordinary flavors, including Beer & Pretzels, Cuban Cigar, Fried Chicken & Waffles, Olive Oil, Spicy Pineapple Cilantro, and tons more!
