Today (Monday, June 22nd) Selena Gomez dropped her new single ‘Good For You’ featuring A$AP Rocky and OF COURSE we had to talk to her like, immediately.
The track is sultry, seductive, and shows us a different side of Selena that we love!
She sat down with Booker to talk all about the new track, what we can expect from the music video (super woman empowering, love love love), working with Zedd on “I Want You To Know,” her new album, and more.
Listen to the full interview below!
On her new single ‘Good For You’ and the music video coming soon.
There’s no love interest in the video, it’s all me. The reason why I wanted it to feel that way is because it’s about truly feeling good about yourself. I love the sensuality. It doesn’t try to hard. It’s not in everybody’s face. It’s like when you have that feeling with someone, when you just want to feel pretty and you want to feel good. Whatever it is, whether its in jeans and a t-shirt, or someone else’s shirt. Just something that makes you feel beautiful and sexy.
I met Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter (the writers), I took them to Mexico with me and they did basically the entire record with me based on this song. I felt like it set the ton of everything. It was my sweet spot. I’m not the world’s greatest singer but I know my strengths as an artist and how to incorporate that into my music. I think they all understood my vision and we’ve created an epic story.
On adding A$AP Rocky to the track…
When I heard the final mix of it, when I heard the song in general, it has that vibe. And I’m obsessed with A$AP’s album, so I was like “Let’s just send it. Worst case scenario he’s like ‘yeah it’s fine, good luck!” He actually really liked the song, so I was thrilled. I was honored. He went in, he hung out. And this is great. When I heard the verse, it was just perfect.
On her new album…
It’s kind of in the final stages of putting it all together right now, which I’m so stoked about. I’m going through stuff, I’m experiencing things and I want to put that in my music. I’m surrounded by a new team, so this is actually a big year. It’s all new. Everything. And I’m really putting my own stamp on my stuff right now.
On working with Zedd on ‘I Want You To Know’…
Recording vocals with him was definitely interesting. He’s very very specific. I like to be a bit more lose when it comes to certain things, that’s when I feel like I capture things. He kind of like hones in on one word. So there were little moments when I was like “You got it. We’re done. Let’s move on to the next one….I think I kind of felt like I was going into his world a little bit, so it was technically his song. I think I was a little more collaborative. I think it doesn’t sound anything like my music, obviously it’s different. But it was fun. We had a great time!”
