Michelle Obama Gets her Freak on with James Corden, Missy Elliott in ‘Carpool Karaoke’

By Jon Wiederhorn

“I have a little time on my hands so do you want to go for a spin?” says First Lady Michelle Obama, moments after stepping into James Corden’s car for a female pop-driven episode of Carpool Karaoke” on Wednesday night (July 20).

In the comedy sketch, Corden acts like he’s was arriving at the White House for a tour and is asked to pull over by the Secret Service. Then Michelle Obama steps into his car and says she’s there to give him the tour. “This is the White House and we’re passing the rose garden, as you see here,” she says. “This is the Oval Office. My husband is in there somewhere.”

“Do you mind if we listen to some music?” the First Lady asks. “I rarely get to listen to music in the car. Crank it up.”

Corden turns on ¬†Stevie Wonder’s “Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours”¬†and Obama reacts with as much emotion as a key political figure is allowed to reveal. “Did you know that Stevie Wonder is my favorite,” she says.”

The First Lady and Corden continue by singing along with Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” (complete with trademark hand moves). Obama tells Corden she’s excited to sit in the front passenger seat since she has rarely been able to do so for almost eight years.

The next song on the playlist is the new benefit number, “This is for My Girls,” which was written by Grammy-winner Diane Warren to promote education for girls around the world. The song features Elliott, Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Rowland, Janelle Monae, Lea Michele and Zendaya. The track benefits Let Girls Learn, which was launched last year by the first lady and President Barack Obama to confront the obstacles that challenge girls across the globe who are unable to get an education.

As Obama and Corden sing, Elliott appears in the back seat and joins in, then all three sing along to her hit “Get Your Freak On.”
